Used Vehicle Maintenance Tips

Friday, February 20th, 2009

What’s the best selling vehicle on the road today?  It just may be the one you own.  According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., the average vehicle on the road today is 8.4 years old.  A number of reasons may be contributing to this trend, for example:

  • Vehicle Size
  • Type of construction
  • Kilometres driven
  • Extended warranties
  • More people buying used vehicles
  • The economy

Whatever the reason, Canadian’s are extending the life their vehicles, which can be a challenge at the best of times.  According to CAA Magazine’s Guide to Car Maintenance, the following tips should help extend your older or used vehicle even longer:

  • Regularly change your vehicle’s oil and filter
  • Always use the recommended oil
  • Check and change your vehicle’s air filter when required
  • Check your vehicle’s charging system and battery
  • Maintain at least a ½ tank of gas at all times
  • Clean your vehicle, ridding it of salt and grime
  • Use protective wax and polish
  • Apply rust control

And most importantly, bring it in for regular maintenance.

Vehicle Trade-In Prices Fall

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Thinking of trading in your current vehicle for a new vehicle? If so, the trade-in value may not be what you think.

According to a J.D. Power & Associates estimate, falling used vehicle prices have erased millions of potential buyers from the new vehicle market as they struggle with loan balances far exceeding the value of their current vehicles.

Lower trade-in values have fallen victim to the credit crunch as traditional vehicle lenders are no longer allowing consumers to roll deficits from old vehicle loans into new vehicle loans.

As new vehicle sales stall, so does the economy, with slumping demand affecting General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC, which have posted declines of 30% for new vehicle sales for the past  4 months.  In fact, GM and Chrysler face a Feb. 17th deadline to show progress in reshaping operations to end losses so they can keep $17.4 billion in emergency loans.

Looking forward, drivers who keep their cars longer will end up paying down their loan balances, freeing up equity and better access to traditional vehicle lenders.

Used Vehicle Buying Tip

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Buying a used vehicle can be risky, especially if you don’t know the history of the vehicle in question.  Even vehicles with high safety ratings can be suspect.  So how does one ensure that a used vehicle is not a lemon?

One way is to purchase a used vehicle history report.  For example, if you’re buying a vehicle in Canada, a CarProof report should suffice.  In fact, Honda Canada recently selected CarProof’s vehicle history reports as part of their used vehicle programs for pre-owned and off-lease Canadian vehicles.

More than a report, it’s peace of mind. A vehicle history report will provide you with the following:
• Current information about Canadian used vehicles and their history
• Canadian (and sometimes U.S.) lien and/or security information on used vehicles
• Canadian insurance and accident claims data on used vehicles

Used Car Loans Toronto

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Thinking of buying a car?  Worried about the economy but still need to get around?  Think Used – car that is.

It’s all in how you how look at things.  For example, is the gas tank half full or half empty?  In the case of those looking for a used car in 2009, things look rosy.

Why, you may ask?  Well, when things get tight, people look at where they can save money, and expensive monthly car leases are one of the first things to go: Whether it’s a used car coming off lease, a car dealer taking back a car with a defaulted lease, or you’re a client of Bernie Madoff, there are recession bargains aplenty.

In a nutshell, there’s a growing inventory of almost new, previously-owned and high quality used cars hitting the Ontario car market at a fraction of their former cost.

But before you start slipping on those driving gloves, you’ll need to secure a car loan; or, a used car loan in this case.

Getting a Used Car Loan

Whether you have good credit, bad credit or no credit, chances are good that you can qualify for a used car loan.

For those with good credit, banks are a viable option.  As Automotive Consultant Dennis DesRosiers tells it, “Banks have stepped up to provide car-loan business as the credit arms of some major car makers have stopped leasing vehicles and been forced to charge more for loans.”

For those seeking new or used car loans in Toronto with bad credit, or no credit, there are alternatives.  For example, local lending institutions and private lenders are two viable options, both growing in popularity and offering new and used car loan products that are more focused on your ability to repay a car loan rather than on past credit history.
